Meteorology Training

ImageOnce you join the Indian Air Force in Meteorology branch, we ensure that you increase your expertise and knowledge. IAF organise a number of training programmes designed to help you gain proficiency as an Aviation Meteorologist and tackle more responsibilities in related fields.


The following are courses organised for the Meteorology Department:

GDOC (Meteorology)
The Ab-initio course of one year duration is split into two equal parts. The first part i.e. Ist stage of GDOC is held at AFA, Dundigal, Hyderabad. The second part i.e 2nd stage of GDOC is being conducted at AFAC, Coimbatore. During the first phase, the objective is to groom the candidates into officers where emphasis is on to General Service Knowledge and other outdoor activities. Only basic knowledge on Meteorology is covered. During second phase the trainees are exposed to theoretical knowledge of atmospheric science. After successful completion of second phase of training at AFAC, trainees go back to AFA, Hyderabad for getting commissioning.

Initial Forecaster Course (IFC)
After commissioning at AFA, Hyderabad, Met officers get posted to various operational units. But prior to proceeding to their respective units, they go to AFAC for eight weeks to undergo Initial Forecasters’ Course (IFC). The objective of the course is to utilise the knowledge acquired during the 2nd stage of GDOC for practical weather forecasting. After completion of this course the officers are awarded Post Graduate Diploma in Meteorology by Bharathiar University, Coimbatore.

ImageBasic Professional Knowledge Course(BPKC)
Basic professional knowledge (BPKC) course is a mandatory professional course conducted for Met Officers with 4 ½ years of service. BPKC is qualifying requirement for promotion from the rank of Flight Lieutenant to Squadron Leader. This course consists of six months of Distant Learning (DL) phase spread between January to June followed by 10 weeks Contact Programme (CP) commencing from July every year. One such course is conducted per year.

 

Advance Professional Knowledge Course(APKC)
Advance professional knowledge (APKC) course is a mandatory professional course conducted for Met Officers with 9 ½ years of service. APKC is a mandatory qualifying requirement for promotion from the rank of Squadron Leader to Wing Commander. This course consists of six months of Distant Learning (DL) phase spread between July to December followed by 15 weeks Contact Programme (CP) commencing from January every year. This course is affiliated to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore for the award of M Phil in Meteorology.
