For Airmen

As an airman, you are the backbone of the Indian Air Force and a vital part of all activities on the Air Base. You begin your career as an Aircraftsman and can rise up to the rank of Master Warrant Officer. During the course of your career, you also have the opportunity to become a Commissioned Officer.

Aircraftsman (AC)
An airman begins his career in the Indian Air Force as an Aircraftsman. He is equivalent to a Sepoy in the Army and Seaman in the Navy. With an elementary knowledge of procedures, equipment handling, operation, precautions, daily servicing acquired while training, he is geared to undertake every task assigned to him. Aircraftsman
Leading Aircraftsman (LAC)  
A notch above the Aircraftsman, the Leading Aircraftsman oversees the activities of an aircraftsman. He is equivalent to a LanceNaik in the Army and Leading Seaman-II in the Navy. With experience and a sound knowledge of the subjects of an aircraftsman, he skilfully takes on all trade related work as well as any additional responsibilities. Leading Aircraftsman
Corporal (CPL)  
Making his way up the ranks, a Corporal undertakes the entire range of jobs of a Leading Aircraftsman. He is equivalent to a Naik in the Army and Leading Seaman-I in the Navy. In addition, he also takes on the responsibility of a Non-Commissioned Officer-in-charge of section, or store, or equipment. Corporal
Sergeant (SGT)  
With wide knowledge of trade-related subjects, the Sergeant supervises the activities of a Corporal. He is equivalent to Havaldar in the Army and Petty Officer in the Navy. Taking on more responsibilities, he also assists the section I/c in managing work in relation to section tasks and the upkeep and maintenance of the section, or equipment, or documents, or vouchers. Junior Warrant Officer (JWO)  
The Junior Warrant Officer supervises the duties of a Sergeant. Equivalent to Naib Subedar in the Army and Chief Petty Officer in the Navy, he is responsible for trade testing and instructional duties. Taking charge of the section, he looks after its general administration. Junior Warrant Officer
Warrant Officer (WO)  
Nearly at the top of the hierarchy, the Warrant Officer co-ordinates with the Junior Warrant Officer to supervise the activities of a Sergeant. He is equivalent to Subedar in the Army and Master Chief Petty Officer II in the Navy. Responsible for the efficient functioning of the section, he guides and supervises personnel under him. Master Warrant Officer (MWO)  
Only the best of the airmen make it to this rank. He is equivalent to a Subedar Major in the Army and Master Chief Petty Officer in the Navy. The Master Warrant Officer is like a section commander, assuming full responsibility for the functioning, administration and maintenance aspects, pertaining to the respective trade and section. He also performs the functions of Senior Station appointments such as Chairman of the SNCO Mess. Master Warrant Officer
