In a Day's Work

Sergeant PS Rao

ImageLiving amongst state-of-the-art technology, Sergeant PS Rao enjoys the challenge his work offers. Presently posted at Air Force Station Bathinda, he works as a Radar Fitter. An avid reader, he also enjoys watching cricket in his leisure time.

Read on to know how he feels about his life in the Indian Air Force.

I have been working in the Air Force since February 1985. For me Air Force brings together two extremes. One extreme offers me challenge, action and excitement that is unheard of in any civilian job and the other extreme gives my family and me, security and comfort.

Usually, my day begins at 5:30 A.M. with a health run, followed by work parade and briefing for the day's tasks. Thereafter, I have my breakfast and report for work at 7:30 A.M.

My job is to ensure that all equipment related to the fighter aircraft are kept in a serviceable state. I have been trained to work on the Radars, which are highly sophisticated and sensitive equipments. There is a tremendous sense of satisfaction when I think that I am directly contributing to the safe flying of our fighter aircraft.

My shift ends at 2:00 P.M. and at 5:00 P.M., I go for physical training and sports. I usually spend the interim by taking a short nap and reading at one of our libraries. We have access to a huge library with an extensive range of literature. In fact, I have developed a fondness for reading after joining the Air Force.

Once I'm home all my time is spent with my wife and children. The Air Force has taken very good care of my family. Both my children have won scholarships sponsored by the Air Force, so they can now pursue further studies.

As I retire in bed, usually around 9:00 P.M., I have a feeling of satisfaction and a sense of fulfilment with my day's work and look forward to another new day.
