The following are the various stages of training during the 48 weeks at the
Technical College:
- Week 1: Initiation
- Week 2-21: Acclimatisation
- Week 22-47: Specialisation
- Week 48: Becoming An Officer
Week 1: Initiation
The
curriculum is divided into 21 weeks of Basic Training followed by 27 weeks of
specialisation. The first week is the stage of preparation wherein the officer
trainee is familiarised with the college. Thereafter, formalities
like getting haircuts, inoculation and understanding basic rules and regulations are fulfilled at this time
Week 2-21: Acclimatisation
The initial 8-10 weeks is the time when the trainee gets acclimatised to the way of life at the Air Force. The day at AFTC begins at 4:30 a.m. followed by a run, quick breakfast, basic parade training, classroom sessions and physical activities.
The
college has state-of-the-art teaching aids as well as electronics and propulsion
labs to aid the learning process for a variety of subjects like electronics, aeronautics
and war studies. Apart from studies, a lot of time is also invested in ensuring
that you imbibe the service customs and etiquette that are an integral part of
the Air Force life.
To ensure the physical and mental health of the students, the curriculum has
compulsorily allotted time for recreation. There are a wide range of activities
like billiards, lawn tennis, working out at the gymnasium, aero modelling and
photography to choose from. Dramatics, debates and quiz competitions also come
as a welcome break from the hectic schedule. Occasionally, parties and social
evenings are organised, which add a sparkle to the routine existence at the college.
Week 22-47: Specialisation
During
the next 27 weeks, which is the second semester, the trainee officer chooses his
area of specialisation. This phase involves visits to R & D establishments,
aviation, electronic industries and front line field units to facilitate assimilation
with other pupil officers. A balance is maintained between theoretical knowledge
and hands-on experience on simulated as well as actual equipment during both semesters
to augment your technical skills.
Camp training is also provided during this semester, to prepare trainee officers for any eventuality of war. The last day at camp is celebrated around a campfire, which is usually the highlight of the training period.
Week 48: Becoming An Officer
At
the end of the second semester, the student's career as an Aeronautical Engineer
is ready to take off. The highlight of the last day at college is the Passing
Out Parade. It symbolises the discipline and code of conduct acquired while training
at the Technical College.
The end of training marks the beginning of an adventurous and fulfilling career as an Officer in the Indian Air Force.
