The
Indian Air Force has Flying Training Establishments exclusively
set up to train you to take off as pilot. Each establishment
is a mark of your progression, from basic to more complex
levels of flying. On completion of training you are awarded
your Wings at a Combined Graduation Parade held at the Air
Force Academy.
Situated at some of the most beautiful locations across the
country, the following are the five Flying Training Establishments:
- Air Force Academy
- Bidar (Karnataka)
- Hakimpet (Secunderabad)
- Basic Flying Training School (Allahabad)
- Transport Training Wing, Yelahanka (Bangalore)
Bidar (Karnataka)
Located 160 km away from Hyderabad, the quaint little town
of Mohammad Bidar (known now as Bidar) is host to an Air Force
FTE. The FTE conducts Advanced Stage flying training for IAF
trainees for 22 weeks, on HJT-16 aircraft. The curriculum
followed here is identical to the one at AFA.
Hakimpet (Secunderabad)
Historically
an important airfield, which was used in World War II as a
transit airfield by the Allied forces, Hakimpet today is a
modern training base. Here pilots selected for the Fighter
Stream undergo a 22-week semester of training on the Polish-built
ISKRA jet trainer aircraft. This semester takes place after
commissioning and is a prelude to continuation of training
on fast jets.
Pilots selected for the Helicopter Stream undergo a semester
of 22 weeks on the HAL built Chetak helicopter and subsequently
move on to another 22 weeks of training at Yelahanka, Bangalore.
Basic Flying Training School (Allahabad)
Located at Bamrauli, Allahabad the Basic Flying Training School
(BFTS) imparts flying training to officers of the Indian Army
and Indian Navy on HPT-32 piston-engined aircraft. Entry of
officers for Army Aviation and Naval Aviation is based on
the requirements of the respective service.
Transport
Training Wing, Yelahanka (Bangalore)
Pilots selected for Transports Stream undergo a one-year program
divided into two semesters wherein they undergo flying training
on Avro, Antonov-32 or Dornier-22-8 aircraft. The Yelahanka
Station also has a Helicopter Unit operating Mi-8 aircraft
where the second semester of training for Helicopter Stream
pilots is undertaken.
