5. With the passage of time, a need was felt to rationalise the in-service courses conducted at AFAC and at the same time integrate them with career progression of an officer wherein each course will be instrumental in one’s career. Hence a review of courses was carried out and a new training pattern was started with effect from January 2006. In the new pattern, the erstwhile courses have been re-designed into two parts comprising of the Distance Learning (DL) followed by a Contact Programme (CP). Four courses were introduced out of which two are generic in nature replacing erstwhile JCC and other two are branch specific professional courses replacing erstwhile branch specific courses such as C Adm Os’ Course, Advanced Accountant Officers Course (AAOC), Junior / Senior Forecasters’ Course (Met) etc. These courses are mandatory for promotion to the next higher rank of Squadron Leader and Wing Commander and also yardstick for selection for various prestigious courses like DSSC etc.


(a) Basic Air Staff Course : Officers (BASCO):

    • The aim of this course is to impart knowledge in employment of Air Power and general service subjects to the officers of the rank of Flight Lieutenant to function in the field assignments and judge their suitability for promotion to the rank of Squadron Leader.

(b) Intermediate Air Staff Course : Officers (ISCO):

    • The aim of this course is to train the officers of the rank of Squadron Leader to perform duties and tasks of Junior Staff Officers, judge suitability for promotion to the rank of Wing Commander and provide the basic qualification to undergo the DSSC (Air Wing) course/HDMC.

(c) Basic Professional Knowledge Course : Officers (BPKC):

    • Basic Professional Knowledge Course for officers of Administration, Accounts, Education and Meteorology branches are conducted at this college. Officers of the rank of Flight Lieutenant are judged for their suitability for promotion to the next higher rank.

(d) Advances Professional Knowledge Course : Officers (APKC):

    • Advanced Professional Knowledge Course for officers of Administration, Accounts, Education and Meteorology branches are conducted at this college. Officers of the rank of Squadron Leader are judged for their suitability for promotion to the next higher rank.

(e) Para Legal Course :

    • Para Legal Courses for officers of Non-tech branches are also conducted at this college to train officers to deal with legal aspects.

6. Besides these, this College is a premier institute for conducting Met branch related courses:-

  1. Initial Forecasters’ Course (IFC)
  2. Advanced Met Courses for Met Tradesmen (SNCOs)
  3. 2nd Stage Training of GDOC (Met)
